With the growing presence of discarded, used syringes and needles in our community, the Fortuna Police Department advises community members to: Never pick up a used syringe or needle with your bare hands.
You can call the department at 725-7550 to have one of our officers safely retrieve and dispose of the needle and syringe. Never push trash down in a public trash can with your hands or feet, regardless of whether all you see is paper. Used needles have often been found in public restroom trash cans, and other trash receptacles.
There have been reports of people sticking themselves accidentally with used needles while trying to push trash down, or remove trash with their bare hands from trash receptacles. When removing trash bags from community or business trash cans avoid holding them against your body as they may contain discarded needles.
Remember that these discarded needles and syringes probably contain body fluids that may have hazardous pathogens including HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and other diseases
